Cassava Starch Production In Nigeria, The Feasibility Report.
Cassava has the potential to drive industrialization in Nigeria more than any other agricultural product. If its full potential is harnessed, cassava could emerge as a “white gold” – not only serving as a major source of non-oil foreign exchange earnings but also as a critical instrument for job creation and a catalyst for national economic development.
Recognizing this potential, successive governments have prioritized cassava cultivation, processing, and export, giving rise to what is now commonly referred to as the Cassava Revolution in Nigeria. This initiative has significantly increased awareness of cassava’s economic and industrial value, positioning it as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s agricultural and agro-industrial development.
Cassava is the most important root crop in Nigeria. Beyond being a staple food for both rural and urban households, it serves as a major source of income for millions of smallholder farmers and processors across rural communities. Annually, cassava contributes approximately 45% of agricultural GDP in Nigeria, primarily for food and domestic use. However, its industrial processing and utilization remain underdeveloped compared to its full potential.
Currently, Nigeria produces about 40 million tonnes of cassava tubers per year. To reduce import dependency and conserve scarce foreign exchange, the federal government has implemented programs aimed at expanding the production of cassava starch as a sustainable alternative to imported corn starch.
Research has shown that cassava starch has extensive applications across multiple industries, including textiles, oil drilling, pharmaceuticals, and the food and beverage sector. Its versatility as a thickening, binding, and stabilizing agent makes it an essential raw material for both industrial and domestic purposes.
The demand for cassava starch in Nigeria is robust and continues to grow. A significant driver of this demand is the federal government’s policy promoting cassava starch as a substitute for imported corn starch. Currently, the annual national demand for cassava starch is estimated at 350,000 tonnes, while the domestic supply stands at approximately 300,000 tonnes, highlighting a clear supply gap and significant market opportunity for investors and industrial players in the cassava value chain.
