Although it has been around for centuries, one truly fashionable and innovative flooring system that has never lost its splendor is terrazzo floor tile. Terrazzo can be found in ancient Greece, as it was used in Italy using lime mortar and broken tiles. Although it reached its peak in Venice and became known as Venetian terrazzo, and has since spread through Europe and around the world, becoming a truly stunning and functional flooring system.

Terrazzo floor tile is made with cement binders in an industrial scale production of tiles. This allows large floor areas to be covered with is terrazzo floor tile, as it can be laid down without requiring additional smoothing while on-site. With a proven resistance to wear and a style that is unsurpassed throughout the centuries, terrazzo floor tile is an ideal flooring application for both businesses and homes.

The top surface of terrazzo floor tiles is decorated with marble stone chips of various colours with suitable addition of cement colour. These tiles are impermeable, easy to replace and long lasting.

Tiles form an essential and integral part of consuming sector like housing, educational /research institutions, hospitals, Industries, hotels, restaurants, cinema halls and other public places. The demands of this product also increase by the need of renovation works of the old above similar buildings.

The ever increasing deficit in housing supply in Nigeria which is estimated at over sixteen million {16,000,000} units and the need for the construction of other important infrastructure if the country is to meet up with the vision 20:2020 project of becoming amongst the top 20 economies in the world by 2020 continues to drive the need to terrazzo floor tiles, an essential construction raw material.

In Nigeria, the market for tiles can be classified into two segments institutional (accounting for 30 per cent) and retail (rest 70 per cent). The institutional segment is characterized by low operating margins, long credit periods and a high inventory turnover. The retail segment is characterized by high selling and distribution costs, and good margins and credit recovery.

This report seeks to confirm the financial viability or otherwise of establishing a terrazzo floor tiles production plant in Nigeria capable of producing a vast range of tile sizes.

The proposed plant is expected to operate for eight {8} hours in a day working for 300 days per annum. Operations would start with two {2} type 500 capacity terrazzo floor tiles plant producing 400*400*25 mm and 600*600*25 mm sizes of terrazzo floor tiles.

The machine produces 375 pieces of 400*400* 25 mm and 300 pcs of 600*600 * 25 mm in one hour and operate for eight {8} hours per day in 300 days per annumM.

The raw materials required for production of terrazzo floor tiles includes cement, pigments, granite flour, marble and colour gravel.
