Batteries are expensive and have a relatively short life span. As discarded batteries grow by the tonnage, entrepreneurs are enticed to start a business in recycling. With an annual world market of $33 billion, lead acid is the most common battery in use. This is followed by Li-ion at $16.6 billion, NiMH at $2 billion and NiCd at $1 billion. All other chemistries only make up $1 billion.

Worldwide, recycling rates for commonly used batteries and especially lead-acid batteries are growing, especially in industrialized countries such as Japan, the United States and countries from the European Community. Recovery of the lead in these batteries after the end of their life cycle can be profitable for businesses if exploited appropriately, and  is important not only for the conservation of natural resources but also for the minimization of related environmental pollution.

In the last twenty years, the center of the international lead market has shifted to China, which has become not only the largest producer of raw and refined lead, but also the largest consumer.

In China, the lead-acid batteries are used primarily in vehicles for starting, lighting and ignition purposes, and in photovoltaic solar installations and telecommunications systems to store energy.

The problems caused by discarded lead-acid battery wastes and lead smelter wastes in Nigeria are well recognized. In most cases, ignorance of the toxic effects caused by excessive exposure to lead resulted in many cases of childhood lead poisoning. Exposure to lead can causes harmful health effects including damage to the central nervous system, the kidneys, the cardiovascular system, and the reproductive system.

In recent years, lead recovery from spent lead-acid batteries has received increased attention. Ogunseitan and Smith estimated that Nigeria could save $1 billion every year per 50% decrease in childhood BLLs in health care costs, and the costs of lead exposure for adults is total $7 billion.

This report seeks to examine the financial viability or otherwise of establishing waste car battery recycling plant in Nigeria to produce lead ingot of 99.97% for export.

The relevant machinery and equipment required for recycling waste car battery comprises of Rotary Furnace Cap. 10.0 Ton / Batch (Oil Fired), Flue Gas Chamber for Rotary Furnace, Primary Air Pollution Control Device of Volume handling 30000m3, Wet Scrubber along with Accessories i.e. Electrical Control Panel and Compressor, Refining Pot Cap. 25.0 Ton/Batch for Re-melting (Oil Fired),Battery Cutting Machine and Jumbo Ingot Moulds.

The production capacity of the proposed plant is one hundred (100) tons per day and it would operate at 75% of the installed capacity working double shifts of 12 hours each for 300 days per annum.
